Welcome.
Deep Rooting is a space for storytelling, research, photography, and reflections about living in the Tropical Andes of Colombia.
This account is a new space of exploration and conversation and welcomes anyone interested in navigating these stories with curiosity.
Who is writing this?
I am Ana María Cañas, the founder and creator of Deep Rooting.
After living and working in New York City for nearly a decade, I relocated with my husband and our sweet Shiba Inu, Scout, to the department of Antioquia, Colombia - my roots - to regenerate 25 acres of land. This newsletter is a witness of our journey and the stories about human resilience, social transformation, and climate change unfolding in this beautiful and often overlooked part of the world.
While I trained in evolutionary and developmental psychology, I am also a photographer and writer using interdisciplinary approaches to explore and address social and environmental challenges. Over the years, I have worked with government agencies, NGOs at the United Nations, and academic institutions, including the Weill Cornell Clinical and Translational Science Center and Cornell University Cooperative Extension-NYC. In the last two years, I have conducted independent research on the social, ecological, health, and political implications of metal mining projects in the Southwest of Antioquia, Colombia - the home and territory of my family and ancestors.
As the creator and founder of Deep Rooting, I work at the intersection of human behavior, well-being, nature, and storytelling photography exploring the effects and psychological origins of the ecological and climate crisis. Through my work, I seek to learn from, acknowledge, and amplify the voices of diverse and underrepresented communities, working to protect their right to live in a safe and healthy environment.
